Microsoft File Format Help
With the delivery of Office 2007 there is a new file format for Word, Excel
and PowerPoint based on the XML file layout. If you have an earlier version of
Office you will need a program to translate the new file formats into ones you
can read. Microsoft has a compatibility pack available. You can download it
here but be aware that it doesn't provide total compatibility at this time.
Before installing it make sure that you have installed all updates for Office
Do you need to open Microsoft Office files and don't have the appropriate
program? Microsoft makes a number of free downloadable viewers to allow you to
open, view and print files. These are for the standard .DOC, .XLS and .PPT file
formats and work with office files through Office 2003. They are available at
the links below.
Word -
This will open
Word documents (.doc etc)
* Rich Text Format (.rtf)
* Text (.txt)
* Web Page formats (.htm, .html, .mht, .mhtml)
* WordPerfect 5.x (.wpd)
* WordPerfect 6.x (.doc, .wpd)
* Works 6.0 (.wps)
* Works 7.0 (.wps)
* XML (.xml)
Excel -
This will open Excel Spreadsheets (.xls )
PowerPoint -
This will open PowerPoint presentations (.ppt) (revised for PowerPoint 2007)
Hint -- All of these
will allow you to print and you can also copy their contents and paste to
another program.
