Windows 7 FAQ's
I am considering upgrading
my computer to Windows 7. What should I know about this.
If you are considering upgrading
your current machine to Windows 7 you should get the Windows 7
upgrade advisor which will tell you if your machine is capable of
running the new operating system. Then you can use the
compatibility tool to check any software or hardware that you
have questions about.
If you are currently running Windows XP there is no direct upgrade
path to Windows 7, a clean install is required. Even if you are
currently running Vista a clean install is still a good idea.
Windows 7 has a migration tool that will allow you to copy all of
the data off of your machine to an external drive and then to
restore it once Windows 7 is installed. It is a good idea to do a
complete backup in addition just in case.
The install is fairly quick and the problems with drivers that Vista
had is not as big an issue. Generally Vista drivers will work with
Windows 7 but some manufacturers are releasing upgraded drivers to
fully take advantage of Windows 7 capabilities.
If you are currently running a machine with XP on it your best bet
is to get a new machine with Windows 7 already installed. That way you can be
sure that all of the correct drivers are loaded and you will probably have a
more powerful machine as well.
How do I get program
shortcuts on the taskbar?
Right
click the program and select pin to taskbar and it should show up. If it doesn't
right click the taskbar and make sure lock the taskbar isn't checked.
What are some of the new
features in Windows 7?
There
are many new features in Windows 7 which can improve your computing experience.
These include Aero peek, Aero shake, the new taskbar, libraries, Windows media
center, improved backup, simplified home networking, built in search (introduced
in Vista but better), pinned documents, sticky notes and it supports touch
screens if you have a touch screen monitor.
