Windows XP FAQ's
. I'm thinking of upgrading to
Windows XP but I've heard it doesn't work with all hardware or software.
How can I be sure that it will work with my system?
. Microsoft has a compatibility test
available for download at
http://www.microsoft.com/WINDOWSXP/home/howtobuy/upgrading/checkcompat.asp.
Download and run this test to see if there are any issues with your existing
software or hardware. The one suggestion I would make is that you have enough
memory. While your system may meet the requirements for memory I recommend that
you have a minimum of 512 MB of RAM.
Also, if you are running Norton Anti-virus you need to uninstall it before the
upgrade and reinstall it afterwards as it will not work if you upgrade with it
installed.
. On my old version of Windows I had a section of the Start Bar that had
shortcuts to frequently used programs on it. Why don't I have that in XP?
. The Quick Launch toolbar is available, it is just turned off by default.
To enable it right click the Start Bar in an empty location and from the pop up
menu left click the toolbars item and click on Quick Launch. This will enable
the toolbar. If you need to make it larger you must right click the start bar,
click on Unlock the Toolbar and then adjust the size. You may relock the toolbar
if you wish to prevent accidentally resizing or moving it.
. I have upgraded to SP2 and now my
network doesn't work. What can I do?
. This is because SP2 turns on the
included firewall by default. This firewall is designed to protect your computer
from Internet attacks but it also closes the ports needed for a network. If you
are using another firewall you can turn off the Windows firewall. If not you can
configure the Windows firewall to allow network connections. For more
information on configuring the Windows firewall go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/community/columns/cableguy/cg0204.mspx
. I installed the security patches that
Microsoft made available and now my computer won't restart. What can I do?
. There are
several things you can do. Try the last known good configuration choice from the
start up menu. This should get you back to the last time Windows worked
correctly. If that doesn't work you can call Microsoft. Any issue with a
security patch is a free call, but that still means you have to deal with the
after-effects. In the U.S., you can call Microsoft at 866-727-2338 if you have
any issue with a patch.
